There are so many different types of doctors these days trying to supplement their income due to decreased insurance reimbursement in their specialty, so many try to perform cosmetic surgery. Liposuction is high on their list for many especially with all the new heavily marketed technology. The way they advertise you would think it is as easy as to go get a haircut or pedicure. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is indeed a surgical procedure and by definition there is no such thing as "non surgical liposuction". So take with a grain of salt, all the slick advertising for newer so called non surgical technologies performed by non plastic surgeons.

Non surgical liposuction explained

With that said lets briefly go through what liposuction is and what it is not. As mentioned there is no such thing as "non surgical liposuction". The reason for this is the definition of the procedure is to suck fat out of the body. To do so one must with a surgical instrument known as cannula enter the skin, which of course is surgery. To be sure lets look at the definition of surgery:

So called "non surgical liposuction".

There are techniques which melt or dissolve some fat cells by injection, heat , ultrasound waves and cold. Yet all of these techniques are slower and not as effective as removing fat with traditional liposuction. Even the newer LASER assisted liposuction simply melts the fat to an oil which is sucked out by the cannula so its still surgery.

What liposuction is not:

• Liposuction is NOT a skin tightening procedure.
• Even the LASER assisted liposuction will NOT tighten a lot of loose skin.
• Liposuction is NOT a weight loss procedure.

What liposuction is:

• Liposuction is surgery.
• Liposuction removes fat cells by suction.
• Liposuction is a body contouring procedure meaning it shapes the contour.
• It is permanent and the cells do not return.

Liposuction is a great procedure for individuals who aren't in need of a full abdominoplasty or aren't considered really obese or have significant amount of lose skin. These people usually have some localized pockets of fat that they just cannot seem to remove through normal dieting and exercise.
