How Laser Hair Removal Works

The diagram illustrates how a laser is used to remove hair permanently from the human body by transferring heat through the melanin at the shaft of the hair which travels down to the follicle and destroys the follicle. That individual follicle is then no longer able to produce a hair ever again.

During a session of laser hair removal, a handheld device is moved over the treatment area. Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle with a beam of light. This light is absorbed by the melanin (the pigment that gives color to skin and hair), which then destroys the follicle. While this process may sound like it hurts, laser treatments are actually quite comfortable as our laser has a next-gen cooling system that protects your skin from damage and discomfort during treatment.

At our medical spa, we use state-of-the-art technology to ensure that each treatment is accurate and safe. Our technicians will start by identifying the areas you want treated and then customize the laser settings for your body type & skin tone.

Skin & Hair Type

The effectiveness of laser hair removal depends on several factors, including skin and hair type, as well as how many treatments are received. Generally speaking, people with darker skin tones tend to respond better to laser treatments than those with lighter skin tones (though there are ways to make laser treatments safe for all skin types). Additionally, people with dark or red hair tend to have better results than those with blonde or gray hair, because the melanin absorbs more energy from the laser beam.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

Patients often compare it to a slight pinch or rubber band snap when receiving laser treatments. The Cutera Xeo laser specifically is one of the least painful hair removal lasers on the market today and uses next-generation cooling systems to make hair removal as painless as possible. Some areas may be more sensitive than others depending on your pain threshold but there is usually minimal discomfort involved. A topical anesthetic cream can be applied before treatment if needed but this should always be discussed with your doctor beforehand as certain medications can interact negatively with these creams.

Before Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Before your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

  • Shave the areas to be treated the night before your treatment.
  • Do not wax or pluck any hair at least a month prior to your laser hair removal treatment.
  • Avoid sun exposure. Do not tan, sun bathe, use a tanning bed or use tanning creams prior to your laser treatment.
  • Do not use any topical products on the areas to be treated prior to the treatment. Use only gentle basic cleansers, soaps or lotions as they may cause sensitivity.
  • Just prior to your treatment, don’t use any lotions, oils, creams or perfumes on the area to be treated.

Is Laser Hair Removal Really Permanent?

If you’re considering laser hair removal to permanently remove unwanted body hair, this should be one of your first questions. While laser hair removal is often referred to as a “permanent” solution, it can be confusing to know what this actually means. In short, nobody can or will guarantee an area will be permanently free of hair.

Is Permanent Hair Removal a Marketing Lie?

Laser hair removal and it’s permanence is most often misunderstood or even described as being an outright lie. This is wrong. Follicles which had no hair present during the treatment are not located and targeted by the laser. These follicles can eventually produce hair because that follicle was undamaged by the laser. New hairs may grow eventually, apart from the hair which was removed with the destruction of a follicle during a laser treatment. It’s not magic, and it is actually removing much of the hair permanently, but the human body does grow new hair that wasn’t previously there. Most patients don’t have enough treatments to target all the follicles, just the follicles that have hair for a few sessions. Fun fact – it is believed that we are born with all the hair follicles we will ever have.

Is it Laser Hair Removal or Reduction?

The industry says hair “removal” when it really should more accurately be described as hair “reduction”, although it’s not a clever marketing lie.

Permanent Results?

So does that mean that laser hair removal is permanent? Technically no—it is impossible to guarantee permanent results from any kind of cosmetic procedure—but it can provide long-term results if done correctly. Most patients see an 85-95% reduction in unwanted body hair after four or five sessions; however, some people may need touch-up treatments every few years as new hairs grow back. It’s important to remember that even though laser treatments reduce the number of hairs growing back, they do not prevent new ones from appearing down the line due to hormonal changes or other factors.

How is Laser Hair Removal Priced?

The first factor in determining the pricing of laser hair removal treatments is the size of the treatment area. Typically, larger areas have higher prices because they require more time and attention to cover properly. The number of treatments needed will also affect the cost; multiple treatments are often necessary to achieve optimal results. As such, many medical spas offer packages with discounts for multiple sessions in order to save clients money.

Average Laser Hair Removal Costs in the USA

The cost of laser hair removal varies depending on factors such as the area being treated, the size of the treatment area, and the number of sessions required to achieve desired results. On average, small areas such as upper lip or underarms can cost between $125 – $250 per session. Medium-sized areas such as arms and legs can range from $250 – $500 per session. Larger areas such as chest or back can cost anywhere from $400 – $900 per session. In general, multiple treatments are required to achieve permanent reduction of unwanted body hair; therefore, it is important to factor in multiple sessions when considering the total cost of laser hair removal.

What Type of Hair Removal Laser Am I Paying For?

The type of laser used during treatment can also impact the total cost. Different lasers have different power levels which means one may work better for certain types of skin or hair than another does. Some patients may also need additional numbing agents during their procedure if their skin is more sensitive than others; this could lead to additional costs as well. Traditionally many businesses used IPL lasers as they were the most affordable and common. Now there are so many more options besides IPL that are much better in terms of strength and versatility,

Finally, your location and provider’s experience level are important factors in determining price too. Prices tend to be higher in metropolitan areas due to increased overhead costs associated with running a business there. Additionally, providers with more experience often charge higher prices for their services since they have more knowledge about what works best for each individual patient’s needs.

Laser hair removal is an effective way to get rid of unwanted body or facial hair permanently so that you can enjoy smooth skin all year round! The cost of laser hair removal treatments will depend on several factors such as size of treatment area, number of sessions needed as well as your location and provider’s experience level. It is important to do your research before committing to any treatments so that you know exactly what you are paying for and what results you can expect from your investment!

Who Is performing Your Laser Hair Removal?

When selecting a provider for your laser hair removal treatment, it is important to consider their qualifications and experience. At Infinity Life Center, you’re receiving your treatment in a board certified plastic surgeon’s clinic and our treatments are typically done by a trained nurse, not an esthetician. Board certified dermatologists are well qualified to perform laser treatments such as laser hair removal; however, other providers such as medical spas may also offer this service at a lower cost than dermatologists due to less training and experience. It is important to research providers carefully before selecting one for your treatment so you can make sure you are getting quality care at an affordable price point.

Regardless of who performs your laser treatments, you should always ensure they have experience treating patients with lasers before proceeding with any procedure. By taking all these factors into consideration when selecting a provider for your treatments you should be able to get great results without breaking the bank!
